Today is Google’s birthday. Google became a privately held corporation on September 27, 1998. Happy birthday Google! That means the requisite Google doodle birthday cake on the homepage, reminding people of the celebration. Artist Wayne Thiebaud did the artwork, a cake with the letter L replaced by a candle.
It also means that Google is nearly a teenager can we expect it to start wearing black and stop communicating with its parents? (Because that’s what I did as a teen.) Or get all moony over Bella and Edward? Or join a garage band? Seems unlikely, considering what Google has accomplished.
Here’s a list of some of Google’s major milestones in its 12 years:
1997 Sheds its earlier, awful name “BackRub” (can you imagine saying, “I just BackRubbed my ex-boyfriend?” Uh, no) and becomes incorporated; but Google as we know it doesn’t start till a year later
2000 Becomes available in 10 langauges
2003 Launches Blogger.com, thus facilitating the Mommy Blogger revolution
2004 Launches Gmail, ensuring those of us whose Yahoo mail accounts had become overrun by spam had an alternative
