Motherhood seems to bring out the most creative part of us – just look at all the moms out there who have started blogs. And why not? It’s a great way to share our funniest anecdotes, wisest lessons and biggest anxieties, and to learn from others.
The newest addition to the momblogosphere (wouldn’t you love to see that word in a spelling bee?) is The Cradle Chronicles, authored by none other than Jenna von Oy. (Yes, Six from Blossom.) Since welcoming daughter Gray Audrey Bratcher a few months ago (she blogged about her pregnancy for People), Jenna has been inspired to write down her “crazy confessions of a first-time mom” and share them with her fans.
Her first entry addresses a topic most moms are quite familiar with – baby’s first time in a pool.
For Jenna, who admits to not being big on beach trips, going to a friend’s pool party was also her first time wearing a bathing suit in years. Only after rummaging through a batch of boxes in her hot attic did she realize that she probably wouldn’t be able to fit into her old bikinis. “It was a jarring moment,” she writes. “You know, the one where it dawns on you that you aren’t the size-two you were a few years ago. The one where you remember you’re still wearing maternity jeans because you can’t even squeeze into your pre-pregnancy sweatpants yet.”
The other, messier issue: how to avoid any unwanted accidents while Gray was in the water. A friend advised her to use swim diapers – but that turned out to create almost as much stress as it relieved!Jenna quickly discovered that even the smallest size of swim diaper was too big on her tiny 10-week-old. “It looked like something that should fit my Aunt Bertha,” she says.
Even with Gray’s bikini bottom helping to anchor the baggy didie in place, their swim was anything but relaxing as Jenna kept watching for telltale…um…floaters. “To the casual observer, I appear to be the model of new-mommy tranquility,” she recalls. “Inside, I’m a bundle of poop-fearing nerves.” After just a short stay in the water, Jenna called it quits to avoid the humiliation of being a party pooper (literally!).
Still, she considers the day a success. Hey, any time a new mom gets to enjoy some adult conversation – and perhaps a margarita or two – is a moment to treasure, right?
And it could have been far worse. Take it from a mom who once had to clean the atomic-poop-and-sand-covered bottom of a squalling toddler on a beach towel.
What new parenting adventures will Jenna write about next?
