Jennifer Garner, who formerly solved mysteries on the TV show Alias is going back at it – this time Agatha Christie style.
Garner was approached by Disney to star as Miss Marple in their remake of the Agatha Christie mystery series. But Disney is switching things up, and changing the original Miss Marple character from being an elderly English spinster to a hip, modern woman who is in her 30s or 40s.
If you aren’t familiar with Agatha Christie’s Miss Marple series, here’s a brief overview: Jane Marple is one of Agatha Christie’s most famous fictional characters, and she appeared in 12 of the famous author’s crime stories. Marple is an elderly spinster who acts as an amateur detective for a hobby.
Marple has been portrayed on the big screen before by actresses Margaret Rutherford, Angela Lansbury and Russian actress Ita Ever. Rutherford appeared in four of the films and portrayed Marple as bold instead of the prim and proper character of the novels. Lansbury played Marple more true to the books’ character – from her looks and style to speaking in clipped tones with stiff bodily movements.
I’m interested to see what Jennifer Garner will do with this character – there’s no doubt in my mind she’ll excel at the role, and I’m looking forward to see her play Miss Marple!
