Kate Beckinsale Dishes on Balancing Motherhood and Vampiring

Kate takes a break from vamping to talk about her family.

Next month, Kate Beckinsale will burst back onto theater screens everywhere as vampire warrioress Selene in Underworld: Awakening. But when she’s not wearing the latex suit, she worries just as much as the rest of us about making sure she’s being the best mom to her daughter.

“One thing that’s so amazing about women is that we spend the limited brain space we have when we’re working or raising kids going, ‘How can I improve this?’ ” she tells Redbook in the new January issue. “The women I like most are the ones who are honest and cop to what they are doing.”

Kate’s daughter, Lily, is almost 13. Even though Kate is divorced from Lily’s dad, Michael Sheen – they now live with second husband Len Wiseman – Kate says her daughter has adjusted well to her unusual household. “I think Lily feels comfortable with the family she has,  and she’s very used to Michael being away,” Kate says. “I’m not naive enough to think that having separated parents has no effect on Lily. I’m sure it does. But she certainly has never heard me talk negatively about either of her dads.”

Kate also makes it a priority to be there for her daughter, despite her long work schedule. “I’ve always been the constant parent, the one who is here,” she says. “Even if I’m working, it’s me. So if anything ripples the water, then it’s important to be home. …I was happy to be around Lily to talk about her day when she got home.”

That work now includes this latest appearance in the hit vampire series. Her character didn’t appear in the third Underworld installment, but she was brought back in for the fourth. Kate relished the chance to play an action heroine again.  “I love that I now get to play these empowered, kick-ass women,” she declares. “I very much wanted to play roles that were not just the girl taking a shower, the girl who was getting beaten, or just the girl. Now I’m someone who goes to Comic-Con!”

Trust us, Lily: This will win you tons of bonus points with the guys in school.
