In 2010, Kate Gosselin performed in the opening sequence of the Emmy Awards broadcast, poking good-natured fun at her famous appearance on Dancing with the Stars. Last year, she got dolled up again for the awards, this time as an audience member.
This year? Not so glam. Kate spent the evening in her Pennsylvania home, serving supper to her eight children, baking bread and going to bed early so she could get up in time to fix her daughters’ hair for school picture day.
The Kate Plus 8 star tweeted to her followers about the Emmys: “Sad to miss a year! It’s a fun night. BUT wouldn’t trade the gr8 weekend I had w my kids for it. ”
So what made the weekend more special than a night hobnobbing with Hollywood royalty?
Going for a sprint with the children, for one – they’ve picked up her passion for staying healthy through running.
For another, she enjoyed watching them engaging in a favorite kids’ activity: shopping at Toys “R” Us.
The Gosselin clan used their own money to buy their favorite playthings. Collin and Aaden both got LEGO sets and Joel some play spy gear. Rounding out the sextuplet list, Alexis chose a Calico Critters playhouse and figures, Leah bought baby-doll accessories and Hannah decided on a fashion design set and a stroller.
Kate’s older twin daughters made out well, too. Cara found a cupcake bead set she liked, while Mady got a deal worthy of her bargain-loving mom: Because two of the boys got LEGOs, she was eligible for a third free set!
Their treats chosen, the family proudly went to the cashier with their allowances. “Thx again 2 ppl in line who waited patiently 4 us!” Kate tweets. “Each child paying took forever!”
But it was all worth it, because all eight children pronounced it “the best day ever!”
Now…could Kate be on the verge of a “best day” of her own?
On Friday, she announced that she was “working” and added coyly, “Exciting things coming…”
Naturally, that raised fans’ hopes that Kate might be on the verge of returning to TV. A few months ago, rumors were flying that she was shopping around a reality dating show, but that no networks had picked it up. Could the show have found a home? Or has she come up with a different concept?
Another possibility: a “Kate in the Kitchen” cookbook. The mom of multiples has become an expert in cooking for a crowd – she even makes her own deli sandwiches with a meat slicer and bread machine – and she’s long been interested in putting her recipes together in book form.
Whatever it is, Kate isn’t ready to tell all just yet.
So what do you think the exciting news could be? And are you sorry she wasn’t on the red carpet this year?
