What would summer be without a family getaway? Whether it’s for an afternoon, a weekend or a 10-day extravaganza, vacations are a terrific way to unwind and make family memories.
Kate Gosselin has had many wonderful family trips with her eight children – many of them courtesy of her reality shows. As she writes in her website’s blog, being TV personalities turned them into “eight little travel bugs” who “came to count on” regular traveling.
Since the end of Kate Plus 8, though, it’s been harder for Kate to take her kids on big trips – for a single mom, the cost and planning are equally daunting. This year, she hoped to give her twins and sextuplets the beach trip they’d been asking for, but wasn’t sure how she’d swing it.
Help came in the form of a company called Relax on the Beach, which provides rental condos and houses on the Alabama and northern Florida Gulf Coast shore. Kate was ecstatic when the company contacted her, offering to comp the family for a week. “I literally cried with excitement because this has been a very tightly budgeted year, and I wasn’t sure our budget could stretch to accommodate a family vacation this summer!” she says.
(Yeah, we can feel a little jells about her getting a sweet freebie – but it’s no different from the perks and swag that other public figures enjoy in exchange for publicity.)
Travel wasn’t included in the offer, so Kate had to cover her own transportation from Pennsylvania. She opted to drive the family’s “BBB” (Big Black Bus) with a rented trailer attached to hold swim gear and food. (Making most of their meals in the rented house helped cut expenses.) Wisely, Kate also asked three good friends to come along. They helped with the kids and got to spend some BFF quality time, too.
The drive was long, but well worth it for a week of sun and surf.“All I heard from my sand-covered kids over the next few days was ‘Thank you, Mommy, for bringing us here!’ over and over again!” Kate says.
Sure, there were a few bumps in the road – like the time they accidentally locked themselves out of the house, and the hot day tempers rose with the heat as the kids argued over souvenirs. But the joys far outweighed the troubles, as they do on any good family trip. They even got to see some of the sites where The Hunger Games was filmed.
“I will forever cherish the memories of my kids’ carefree laughs as they purposely “wiped out” in the waves and as they furiously dug trenches to protect their elaborately created sand castles,” Kate writes. “I will treasure the many pictures we snapped, permanently capturing those memories for always.”
