Is Katie Couric leaving CBS Evening News to host a daytime talk show?

The AP reports that a network executive confirms the rumors that Katie Couric is leaving CBS Evening news, quitting the gig to pursue her own syndicated talk show.

Will  Harry Smith take over as CBS Evening News anchor? A lot of fans are missing him on The Early Show!

Katie Couric has yet to make an official announcement about quitting the CBS Evening News, though when asked about it by David Letterman recently, she said her contract expiring “means I could leave the network,” explaining she was “figuring out the future.”

Katie Couric has been the CBS Evening News anchor for less than five years after leaving the Today Show in 2006. Couric has never had impressive ratings for the evening news, always finishing third among the evening news programs.

CBS News spokeswoman Sonya McNair says, “We’re having ongoing discussions with Katie Couric. We have no announcements to make at this time. Until we do, we will continue to decline comment on rumor or speculation.”

Katie Couric’s contract expires on June 4.
