Now that 2012 is here, Giuliana and Bill Rancic are putting the hardships of the past behind them and looking forward to a brighter future. Giuliana is continuing to recover from her painful double mastectomy and breast reconstruction, but once her doctor gives the go-ahead, she and Bill plan to resume their journey to start a family.
In a recent interview, Giuliana said, “We’re not done trying and we want kids.”
Their first stop will almost certainly be to a fertility specialist; the couple had previously tried in vitro fertilization and were about to start another round when Giuliana’s breast cancer was diagnosed.
IVF is no walk in the park – it involves weeks of doctors’ visits, self-administered hormone shots that can cause unpleasant side effects, and egg retrieval under general anesthesia. It doesn’t come with a guarantee, either. Giuliana became pregnant on her second try, then miscarried. Then there’s the cost, which can run into the tens of thousands.
But for couples with infertility issues who want biological children – including some very prominent celebrities – the treatment is often their only hope. And when it works, all the work and expense is forgotten when you look into the eyes of your new baby.
So keep the faith, Giuliana and Bill. Before long, maybe you’ll join the ranks of these famous moms who also turned to IVF (or are rumored to have done it).
Celine Dion 1 of 6Celine is one of the few famous moms who has been very open about her IVF treatments. After conceiving son Rene-Charles through in vitro, she went through several more tries and one miscarriage before having twin sons Nelson and Eddy.
Marcia Cross 2 of 6Already in her 40s when she married, Marcia has said she skipped her honeymoon in order to begin in vitro. (Some accounts say she used donor eggs.) The result: twin girls Eden and Savannah.
Courteney Cox 3 of 6She's no longer married to David Arquette, but the legacy of their marriage is daughter Coco, conceived through IVF.
Julia Roberts 4 of 6Although she has never discussed it publicly, there has been much speculation that the Pretty Mom used in vitro to have twins Hazel and Phinnaeus.
Two of the three Dixie Chicks 5 of 6Emily Robison (far l.) and Martie Maguire (far r.) are both IVF veterans. Thanks to the procedure, Emily has a son and a twin son and daughter. Martie has twin daughters.
Rod Stewart and Penny Lancaster 6 of 6Shown here with son Alistair, the rocker and his wife used IVF to conceive baby Aiden, who turns 1 in February.
