Kendra Wilkinson is facing a bit of a public-image probelm, as one sex tape has quickly turned into a string of sex tapes, portraying the reality TV star in an increasingly unflattering light. (Side note: Why is every scandal right now all about the numbers? No one has ‘one’ of anything anymore. Not one mistress, not one sex tape. It really makes it impossible to fall back on the old’ ‘I just made one little mistake’ excuse.) But as much as Kendra may worry about how we perceive her, I’m guessing her biggest concern right now is what she will say to son Hank, Jr. some day.
So I thought we might want to take a wise look back at the words of Pamela Anderson, who knows a thing or two about illicit videos, and how to explain them to your kids.
Anderson, as you may recall, made a tape with her ex-husband Tommy Lee, back when they were young and in love. And years later, Anderson opted for a full-disclosure to her sons Brandon, 13, and Dylan, 12, spurred on in part by a reference to the infamous tape in the movie Borat.
“I knew kids were going to watch the film and there was a reference to the tape in the movie and they’re that age and, you know, people are going start saying things,” Anderson told the Daily Mail. “I just said, ‘Look, Mummy and Daddy were massively in love, we videotaped everything, everything was videotaped, and you’re probably going hear about something at school.””
She went on to explain that she told them “Everybody’s naked, hugging, kissing, all that good stuff and someone stole the tape. And I remember when we were watching the film and Dylan goes: ‘You mean everybody has seen this? And I said: ‘Yes.’
According to Anderson, when she brought up her past with the boys, she found they weren’t totally in the dark. They already knew about her magazine covers. But that they really don’t see her as a sex symbol, but as a mom—their mom.
Color me impressed. It seems like she did a great job explaining all this, and preparing them for the movie, or for comments for their friends, or whatever. Let’s hope Kendra is taking notes, and when the time comes, handles her disclosure with as much grace and honesty and Pamela did.
