Kimye to Get Hitched at Versailles: 7 of the Most Lavish, Expensive Celebrity Weddings

Although I’m married, I never had a wedding. Being a frugilista is in my DNA, and even though I was madly in love with my husband, I wanted to use the thousands of dollars I’d spend on a wedding on more important life matters instead. Rather than splurge on a Vera Wang dress and centerpieces that probably cost more than my monthly car payment, my husband and I instead proclaimed our love by traveling on two honeymoons to Thailand and Australia (traveling is also in our DNA) and put the rest of our money towards a down payment on our house. Sometimes, I kind of wonder what my daughter will think when she’ll never see photos of her mother in a beautiful white dress, but at least I have the ones with the koala bears to show her instead.

As we all know, celebrities aren’t like us regular people, and when it comes to extravagant and expensive weddings, they know how to put on a show or two!

Kanye West, who not too long ago proposed to Kim Kardashian at a ballpark in San Francisco, has big plans for the couple’s upcoming nuptials. Kanye says he wants to marry his baby mama at Versailles Castle, right outside of Paris, France. Makes sense, considering this couple is always in Paris, right? Something tells me that their wedding might definitely take the cake when it comes to the most expensive and extravagant wedding of all time! I mean, the Kardashians do have a lot of experience when it comes to planning weddings!

Check out our photo gallery of some of the most talked about celebrity weddings in recent times, and let us know what you think. Sadly, 5 out of 7 of these marriages have ended in divorce.

Elizabeth Hurley and Arun Nayer had two weddings to help proclaim their love. The first took place in a medieval English castle, while the second was in Nayar's native India at the Umaid Bhawan Palace. They spent $300,000 to fly their nearest and dearest on private jets to watch them exchange $200,000 wedding bands. Elizabeth wore a Donatella Versace wedding gown for one ceremony and traditional Indian garb for the other. All in all, the price for both weddings came to a cool $2.5 million.

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes had a wedding that cost an estimated $3.5 million in 2006. Tom and his bride had a lavish celebration, complete with a chocolate cake of five tiers decorated with marzipan roses. It took place at the 15th-century Odescalchi Castle, just outside of Rome. And here we all thought it would last!

When it comes to his love and family, there's no price too high for the Trumpster! Although it cost just a measly million dollars, the Palm Beach wedding of Donald Trump and Melania Knauss in 2005 was quite an opulent affair. The Grand Mariner cake weighed 200 pounds (!), and the bride's Dior dress cost $200,000 — with a 13-foot train, 1,500 rhinestones and pearls, and a weight of 60 pounds. Total cost: $1 million.

Prince William and Kate Middleton might not have had the most expensive wedding in the world, but it sure was one of the most extravagant. Their reception cost about $600,000, which I'm sure is just pocket change for the Royal Family.

Remember Liza Minnelli and David Guest's wedding photo? You know, the one that included Michael Jackson and Elizabeth Hurley? Yeah, thank goodness Internet gossip blogs didn't exist during the time! Liza spared no expense for her fourth wedding (it was Guest's first). Her Fifth Avenue affair rings in as one of the most expensive celebrity weddings ever, costing a whopping $3.5 million. I'm sure that's just pocket change for her.

    Redbook's Mother & Shakers Award

I don't want to say that this was Paul McCartney's biggest mistake, but his marriage to Heather Mills sure did burn a huge hole in his pocket — as did his costly divorce to the former model. In 2002, McCartney spent $3.2 million on his wedding, held at a 17th-century church in Monaghan, Ireland. On the 300-strong guest list were a host of celebrities, including Elton John, Eric Clapton, and Paul's old bandmate Ringo Starr. The couple, who faced a 25-year age gap, had been dating for three years before eventually tying the knot. Nearly six years later, however, it all fell apart. The two went through a bitter and public divorce, with Mills eventually winning $48.6 million of the $250 million settlement she sought.
