10 Lessons We Learned from Celeb Parents in 2010

  • Toddlers can be fashionistas, too. 1 of 10
    Toddlers can be fashionistas, too.
Katie Holmes has long been known as a style icon, but now her toddler is too. When three-year-old Suri was spotted at multiple events wearing tiny toddler heels, the media went nuts. Holmes defended the shoes by telling Access Hollywood, "She, like every little girl, loves my high heels. They’re actually ballroom dancing shoes for kids."
  • Your calls may be recorded. 2 of 10
    Your calls may be recorded.
If you're going to threaten to burn your ex's house down, make sure nobody's recording it. Mel Gibson wins this year's award for worst rant on tape when he was recorded threatening his ex girlfriend and mother of his children repeatedly, using racist and misogynist slurs all along the way. Honorable mention goes to Audrina Patridge's mother for her drunken post Dancing With the Stars rant against former The Hills star Lauren Conrad.
  • Watch your spouse (and their tapes.) 3 of 10
Watch your spouse (and their tapes.)
Sex scandals have always graced Hollywood headlines, but this year took it to a whole new level for celebrity moms. Elin Woods' and Sandra Bullock's husbands had a string of affairs, former VP candidate John Edwards admitted to fathering a secret child, Brett Favre got caught sexting and NFL star Tiki Barber left his pregnant wife for an NBC intern. Even celeb parents who escaped drama with their own spouse got into it with ex's. Kendra Wilkinson and Fantasia Barrino both had sex tape scandals this year.
  • Single moms kick ass. 4 of 10
    Single moms kick ass.
Even in the midst of devastating break-ups, it was nice to see single celeb moms kick so much butt. Sandra Bullock brought home a baby and an Oscar, Halle Berry was the first African-American woman to grace Vogue's September issue since 1989, Michelle Williams got a Golden Globe nomination for her performance in Blue Valentine, Diane Keaton landed an HBO pilot alongside Ellen Page and Reese Witherspoon got a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
  • Celeb kids can have careers, too. 5 of 10
Celeb kids can have careers, too.
Famous moms meant famous kids this year. Ten year-old Willow Smith, daughter of Will and Jada Pinkett Smith, signed a recording deal with rapper Jay-Z after her single “Whip My Hair” debuted at number 11 on the Billboard Hot 100 and her brother, Jaden, landed his first leading role when The Karate Kid came out. The year was lucrative for those outside of the Smith family too. Romeo Beckham, the eight year-old son of David Beckham, is currently designing his own brand of sunglasses (in conjunction with mom and dad of course) and Madonna's daughter launched a fashion line with her mom through Macy's this year.
  • Accept your children for who they are. 6 of 10
Accept your children for who they are.
Another positive note to come from celeb moms was a distinct sense of acceptance for their children's lifestyle choices. Cher openly discusses coming to terms with her daughter's gender transition, The Breakfast Club star Ally Sheedy accidentally outed her own daughter then did a series of interviews defending her daughter's choice and this mom won near celebrity status simply for defending her five year old son's right to dress as a girl for Halloween. Celeb parents Sara Gilbert and Ricki Martin also came out this year.
  • Don’t stress the baby weight. 7 of 10
    Don't stress the baby weight.
While admitting she still had 15 pounds of baby weight left to lose, Food Network host Padma Lakshmi told reporters, “I wanted to show women that you can dress well, that you can still feel sexy, that you can still feel confident, and it was OK if my boobs were big because I was feeding another human being." Gwyneth Paltrow and Milla Jovovich both admitted that they are having trouble dropping the final pounds years after their kids were born while new mom Tiffani Thiessen said, “I’d love to be my size again but my body is just not that way and I’m okay with that.”
  • Silly Bandz arent just for kids. 8 of 10
Silly Bandz arent just for kids.
Celeb parents Sarah Jessica Parker and Regis Philbin were both photographed wearing the stretchy animal-shaped rubber bands this year while new dad Neil Patrick Harris took it another step further by making jokes about the bands on The Late Late Show.
  • Give and give and give. 9 of 10
    Give and give and give.
Celeb moms rose to the challenge when the earthquake in Haiti pushed thousands into homelessness. Top donors include Gisele who gave $1.5 million, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie who gave $1 million for relief, Sandra Bullock pledged $1 million and Madonna forked over $250,000. Celeb parents Wyclef Jean, Reese Witherspoon, Ben Affleck and Julia Roberts also joined forces with a host of other celebs to hold a telethon that raised $57 million.
  • Breastfeeding is the buzz word. 10 of 10
    Breastfeeding is the buzz word.
Modern Family star Julie Bowen offended a few folks when she posted photos of her twins breastfeeding at the same time and model Gisele incurred media wrath when she said that breastfeeding for six months should be mandatory in an interview with Harper's Bazaar.
