The last thing that an expectant mother wants to talk about is her experience with miscarriages. That has to be especially true for a celebrity who experienced those miscarriages not in the privacy of her own home or doctor’s office, but in the glare of the public eye. For Lily Allen her experiences with multiple miscarriages has been brutal both with their timing and with the attention that they garnered her.
A pregnancy is supposed to be the happiest time of a woman’s life full of the anticipation of the upcoming joyous arrival. For a mom-to-be who has experienced one miscarriage it is a time full of apprehension waiting for the flutter of a heartbeat on an ultrasound. For a mom-to-be who has experienced more than one miscarriage it is a trying time waiting for something heartbreaking to go wrong. A mom-to-be who has gone through multiple miscarriages is scared to get excited, terrified to tell anyone she is expecting, and always waiting for the bad news up until the very moment she holds her baby in her arms for the first time. I know, I’ve been there – many times. So has Lily Allen – twice.
Lily Allen has not only had two miscarriages. She had two miscarriages after the miraculous twelve week point when expectant moms are told that they can relax. Lily lost her first baby in 2008 when she was only four months pregnant. She tragically lost her second baby in November 2010 when she contracted a viral infection when she was six months pregnant. Both losses have weighed heavily on the popstar who has made no secret about her desire to have children.
Multiple miscarriages are one of those taboo subjects that moms just don’t talk about even though approximately 15% off all pregnancies end in miscarriage each year. Most women go on to successfully carry a pregnancy to term, but for those who have gone through a miscarriage pregnancy can be a difficult time.
Thankfully Lily is not alone in the pregnant-after-miscarriage celebrity club. Several celebs have opened up about their own difficulties with multiple miscarriages and their ultimate succesfful pregnancies. Courteney Cox has revealed that she suffered several miscarriages during her years on Friends. Supermodel Christie Brinkley suffered three miscarriages during her marriage to Peter Cook. Figure skater Nancy Kerrigan had six miscarriages between her first and second children. Although it is a difficult path full of fear and anxiety, the joy at the end will finally help heal the part of Lily’s heart that has been broken from her mulitple miscarriages.
The thoughts of every mother who has ever mourned a baby gone too soon are with Lily Allen as she announced her third pregnancy today!
