M.I.A. Is a Bad Girl: The Super Bowl Flip-Off Love It or Hate It: What the World is Saying

M.I.A. Is a Bad Girl

In case you missed it, on Sunday night the musical artist M.I.A. flipped off the world. It was a simple gesture, just the raising of the middle finger on her left hand while she shared the stage with the one and only Madonna. But in highlighted that dastardly digit, she angered and amused many. Big wigs of NBC had to apologize, morning shows hosts played pundits on the topic, and Twitter? Well Twitter went off.

It was a apt action for M.I.A. (Mathangi Maya Arulpragasam),  a second generation rebel. Her father was reportedly affiliated with the Tamil Tigers – a rebel group in their native Sri Lanka. But M.I.A. doesn’t brandish guns or amo, she rebels in more subtle (and sellable) ways: through her music, her fashion and through her actions – such as flipping off the Superbowl audience.

Oh and her new single? It’s called “Bad Girls.”

Here are some of the things people are saying about M.I.A. in the aftermath of her now infamous act:

The Parents Television Council is MAD!
"It is unfortunate that a spectacular sporting event was overshadowed once again by broadcasting the selfish acts of a desperate performer. …performers who have based their careers on shock profanity and titillation. [An apology would be] hollow after yet another slap in the face to families. Either the NFL and NBC will take immediate steps to hold those accountable for this offensive material in front of a hundred million Americans, or they will feebly sit back and do nothing."
