Now to me and most people babies are tiny miracles of life that poop and cry while adding immeasurable joy to life and will eventually grow up to have defined personalities and hopefully, be functioning members of society who love their mother very much. This is clearly a highly edited summary of the definition of baby, but I’m sure you know just what I mean. Compare that to how businesses, specifically tabloids in this case, view babies: Tiny dollar signs floating in the air just waiting to be grabbed up and slapped on a cover.
Tabs pay millions of dollars for these photos and the sales of nabbing a great first shot of a new baby can make a ton of money and establish the magazine as the source to go to for news. People Magazine scores most of these images and had a huge coup last week with their Sandra Bullock secret baby issue. They were also the ones who brought us the first look at Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt’s twins.
So which magazine sold better in the Sandra vs Angelina showdown?
While Angelina’s cover still holds its current rank as the highest selling baby magazine cover EVER, Sandra is hedging close and is expected to bump the twins out of #1.
“Sandra’s cover has been on newsstands for a week and it has already sold over 2.7 million copies,” a source told the PopEater website. “That’s only 100,000 less than the 2.8 million copies the magazine sold when Angelina’s twins graced the cover — and half-million more copies than the June 2006 issue with exclusive baby pictures of Brad and Angelina’s first daughter, Shiloh, which moved 2.2 million newsstand copies.”
