Now that Manny Pacquaio has defeated Antonia Margarito, all eyes are on Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Although many boxing fans have probably given up on the idea of a Pacquaio vs. Mayweather fight ever taking place, it didn’t stop the question being asked during the Pacquiao vs. Margarito post-fight interview on Saturday night.
Following Pacquaio’s victory by unanimous decision over Margarito, when asked if he wants to take on Mayweather, Pacquaio simply said that if a fight is going to happen, it will happen.
Pacquaio said he doesn’t need to defeat the currently undefeated Mayweather just to prove his worthiness to people. Pacquiao’s victory over Margarito means that he has now claimed the WBC World Super Welterweight Championship title.
Pacquiao’s trainer Freddie Roach issued a challenge to Floyd Mayweather on Saturday, saying the time had come for the undefeated American to decide if he would face the father of four in the ring.
“He (Mayweather) has got to do something,” Roach told reporters after the Pacquiao win.
“After this great performance by Manny, Mayweather just has to put up or shut up now and move out of the country.
“Let’s face it. Manny’s way above him at this point because I remember when he (Mayweather) was ducking Margarito and he wouldn’t fight him either. If he doesn’t fight Manny now, we know this guy should retire.”
Mayweather had been expected to meet Pacquiao earlier this year until negotiations collapsed over the American’s demand for random drug testing.
Right now, there is no deal set between the Pacquiao and Mayweather camps.
But fans are asking for it, so we can’t say for sure if there won’t be a fight in the future.
Although there have been several scandals between the two, Pacquiao’s camp is still open to negotiate a possible deal with Mayweather.
Do you think a Mayweather vs Pacquiao fight will ever take place?
