Fans of the Discovery Channel’s “Storm Chasers” were shocked at to learn in the Nov. 3 episode that meteorologist and longtime storm chaser Matt Hughes had passed away, on May 26, 2010, in Wichita, Kansas at age 30.
The episode, which chronicled Hughes’ final chase, was dedicated to his memory and was aptly titled “Dedication.”
His death has triggered a lot of questions regarding the cause, but was unrelated to his dangerous hobby. Rumors are flying that Hughes died from complications that he acquired after a failed suicide attempt.
Though it has not been confirmed, Hughes was said to have been dealing with a lot of personal issues and emotional conflicts. A friend of Hughes posted a blog saying that he was suffering from depression.
Hughes left behind his wife Kendra and two boys, Hunter and Collin.
How unfortunate that if the rumors are true, that Hughes didn’t seek the help he needed to overcome his depression. His kids, unfortunately, will pay the price of being left without a father.
Our thoughts are with his wife and children, who have to relive this loss again with the airing of the episode.
