Maxwell Drew Is In Good Company: Other Celebrities Who Have Unisex Names

New mom Jessica Simpson

I’m sure a lot of people were scratching their heads yesterday after new celebrity parents Jessica Simpson and Eric Johnson announced that they named their baby girl Maxwell Drew Johnson. There were a lot of blog commenters that chipped in with their two cents by saying, “Why would she give her daughter a boy name?” or “Poor Maxi is going to get bullied at school later on,” and “Did she name her after Nick Lachey’s brother?”

And then there were those Maxi Pad jokes.

Well, we’ve got news for you: Maxwell is in good company when it comes to the increasing popularity of unisex names that are used by both girls and boys. Sure, when you thought of the name “Drew” the first thing that came to mind was probably Drew Lachey or even Drew Carey, but what about Drew Barrymore? And as far as the name Maxwell, sure she might have been drinking her favorite brand of coffee while thinking of fiancé Eric’s grandmother’s surname, but Maxi does have a cute, southern ring to it. Jessica is a Texan afterall.

Check out our photo gallery of other celebrities who have unisex names and have somehow survived the torture that was playground taunting by their elementary school peers and have made it out both safe and sound.

And as far as those Maxi Pad jokes: well, who thought of that first, you or your child? Somethings we just can’t blame our kids’ friends on.

Oh Taylor Hanson, how you bring back silly, embarrassing memories from 1997. The soon-to-be father of five's real name is actually Jordan Taylor Hanson, so he's got two in the bucket for unisex names. And I don't think anyone gives him or fellow celebrity Taylor Lautner a hard time for sharing a first name with female performer Taylor Swift.

  • Jamie Lynn Spears 2 of 7
    Jamie Lynn Spears
Jamie has been a common unisex name for years. Britney Spears' little sister Jamie was actually named after both of her parents - her father's name is Jamie while her mother's name is Lynn.

    Michael Michele
Sure, Michael might be a typical male name, but did you know that there are plenty of actresses out there who have Michael as a first name too? And for anyone who even thinks about joking around with Michael Michele about her name, we've got news for you: this mama can kick some serious butt on the basketball court, so I wouldn't even try.

When Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt named their first biological child Shiloh back in 2006, a lot of people went "huh?". Fast-forward six years later and it's considered one of the prettiest and most feminine names out there. The little tyke also happens to share her name with another famous actor, Shiloh Fernandez who happens to be one heck of hunk, too.

No, I seriously doubt Jessica Simpson named her baby Drew after her ex-brother-in-law and Nick Lachey's brother, Drew Lachey. Let's not forget that there are other famous female Drews out there, like this one who is currently expecting as well.

The name Harper can actually go both ways, too. David and Victoria Beckham named their first daughter Harper while musician Paul Simon named his son Harper, too.

  • Jordan Knight 7 of 7
    Jordan Knight
I'm sure everyone remembers Jordan Knight from New Kids on The Block, right? Well, no one seems to be bothered that his name is also a hugely popular crossover name with girls, like fellow musician Jordin Sparks.
