Remember Mayim Bialik from the hit TV show Blossom? I loved that show and used to watch it every week when I was younger. It seems like Blossom was on television just yesterday, but Mayim Bialik is all grown up and has two children of her own.
Mayim is a huge fan of attachment parenting, which involves positive reinforcement, co-sleeping, and also breastfeeding. While the majority of celeb moms in Hollywood breastfeed their babies, most of them stop by the time their child is a year old.
Mayim’s younger son, Fred, is three years old, but Mayim is still breastfeeding him and has not totally weaned him yet. She even admits that he still wakes up at night to nurse even though he is no longer an infant.
I’m sure that there are several different opinions on both sides of the spectrum as to whether continuing to breastfeed a preschooler is natural and normal, or kind of gross.
Personally, I honestly don’t think I could have a child attached to me for that long. However, I am a big believer in doing what works for you and your family as far as child rearing goes, so I think that if this is what works for Mayim and her son, then she is doing a great job.
I am curious to hear other opinions on this subject. Is prolonged breastfeeding natural, or do you find it more on the gross side?
