Mayor Daley of Chicago just announced today that he will not be seeking re-election as mayor for the next term in 2011. In a statement made at City Hall, he said, “The truth is I have been thinking about this for the past several months…In the end this is a personal decision, no more, no less.”
Although there will be much speculation that his decision came as a result of his low approval ratings, we can’t help but wonder if Mayor Daley has decided to step down so he can put his family first and spend more time with them.
Daley’s wife, Margaret, is currently enduring a battle with cancer. The couple also has three children, so it’s quite possible that he has chosen to spend as much time with his spouse and kids as possible. His wife reportedly smiled when he made the announcement that he would not seek re-election.
Mayor Daley is the 54th mayor of Chicago, and has been in office since 1989. He is 68 years old.
