Meredith Baxter, once known as Meredith Baxter Birney, talks about when she came out as a gay woman in 2009 in her memoir Untied. She also discusses her old life and marriage to David Birney.
About the abuse, Baxter writes, “It was so sudden and unexpected, I couldn’t tell you which hand hit me, or even how hard. I do recall thinking, ‘I’d better not get up because he’s going to hit me again.’” David Birney has denied all allegations of any abuse ever occurring.
Baxter also discusses how she finally turned to alcohol as a means of coping with both physical and mental abuse. She is now a recovering alcoholic and has been sober since 1990.
Baxter says in her book that her life is happy now. She has lived with her partner for six years, general contractor Nancy Locke. The relationships she has with her children are healthy. She is also an advocate for breast cancer research; she was diagnosed herself in 1999.
I hope that writing Untied helped Meredith Baxter find some peace in her life, and that she is able to heal.
