'The Roommate' Opens Today: Minka Kelly, Leighton Meester Star in Teen Dream Flick

The Roommate starring Minka Kelly and Leighton Meester opens today. I predict the psychological thriller about a deranged college freshman who becomes obsessed with her new roommate will be a huge hit!

Both of my teen daughters are dying to see The Roommate and I’m taking a car load of middle-school girls to the film tonight. I’ll report back this weekend with a parent review.

Minka Kelly plays a college student in The Roommate. Kelly, who Esquire magazine calls the “Sexiest Woman Alive,” is a familiar face as one of the stars from the fabulous Friday Night Lights. Kelly’s co-star in The Roommate is Leighton Meester, star of Gossip Girl and recently starred in Country Strong.

Aly Michalk is also in The Roommate. Michalk is the star of the CW’s Hellcats and a Disney Channel alum. To top it off, Cam Gigandet, famous (in teen circles) for his role as evil surfer Kevin Volchok in FOX TV series The O.C. plays Minka Kelly’s boyfriend. It’s a dream team cast for the teen and college audience, so I don’t see how this movie can lose.

The Roommate tells the story of Sara (Minka Kelly), a talented young design student from Iowa, arrives in Los Angeles eager to start college and get to know the big city. Pretty, vivacious Sara charms her new dorm mates, especially her assigned roommate Rebecca (Leighton Meester).  Rebecca is a wealthy girl from Pasadena, Rebecca immediately takes Sara under her wing, showing her the cultural highlights of the city and sharing an overstuffed closet of designer clothes with her.

But when Sara makes more friends on campus, including fun-loving party girl Tracy (Aly Michalka), Rebecca isolates herself and grows oddly resentful of her roommate’s social life.  As Sara’s romance with new boyfriend Stephen (Cam Gigandet) unfolds, the crazy Rebecca becomes determined to have Sara all to herself.

I’ll make this prediction right now: Aly Michalka will be the first character to get knocked off. Call it a hunch.
