Miss America 2011: Would You Want Your Daughters to Participate in This Scholarship Contest?

Miss America 2011

It's not a beauty pageant, it's a scholarship contest.

Miss America 2011 will be crowned tonight. Apparently, when Candice Bergen said as the character Kathy Morningside in the movie 200o movie “Miss Congeniality” that the competition wasn’t a beauty pageant but a scholarship contest, she could have been talking about the Miss America pageant.

We think of the glamor of the gowns and the swimsuit portion of the night and think that it’s all about beauty, but in reality Miss America is the world’s largest provider of scholarship assistance for young women.  Just last year, the organization, together with its local and state organizations, gave more than $45 million in cash and scholarship assistance.

Could there be something to those extreme “Toddlers and Tiaras” moms?

Miss America can provide fabulous opportunities for young ladies. Would you encourage your daughters to participate in the pageants?
