Today is a day that wine lovers (including me!) across the country are celebrating…it’s National Drink Wine Day! That’s right, every year on February 18, it is National Drink Wine Day. Drink red, drink white…it doesn’t matter, just drink wine!
All over the world, wine has been produced for thousands of years. There are archaeological sites in Macedonia that have uncovered evidence of early European wine production that date back 6,500 years! No wonder that the art of making wine has been almost perfected since then.
Wine’s popularity continues to grow every year. There are over 20 million acres in the world dedicated to growing grapes for the sole purpose of making wine, and more and more celebrities have started getting in on the game, too.
Italian-American director Francis Ford Coppola comes from a family with a long history of winemaking. British singer Cliff Richard, has been lifelong wine enthusiast and entered the wine industry because it’s something he enjoys. Sting, Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Johnny Depp, and David and Victoria Beckham own vineyards and wine estates solely for their own personal use.
Whatever the reason celebrities are getting into the business of wine, there are a lot of them doing it.
Actor Gerard Depardieu, is active in both the production and business dealings of his wineries. He owns wineries in several countries across the globe. Raymond Burr (before his death), Bob Dylan, Carlos Santana, Madonna, Dave Matthews, Antonio Banderas and Martha Stewart are more celebs in the industry.
Sports celebs are also into winemaking. Retired football extraordinaire Joe Montana partnered with long time Beringer winemaker Ed Sbragia to make their joint venture wine Montagia. Although he’s not involved in the day-to-day winemaking process he is involved in deciding on the overall “vision” of the wine and participates in tasting and blending trials. Mike Ditka Wines is owned by former American football coach Mike Ditka. who partners with the Mendocino Wine Company for its production.
While drinking any alcohol in excess is unhealthy, the list benefits for drinking wine in moderation continues to grow. A glass of wine a day has been shown to improve heart health, reduce forgetfulness, help you lose weight, boost your immunity, and help prevent bone loss.
