My kids are 4 and 5 years old. I don’t really shield them from TV or The Big Screen. It is a part of our family and we discuss that what we see on the TV and at the movies can be pretend. So far they have done well understanding that. I don’t mean that I let them watch horror flicks, or any movies that have sexual interactions. But, when it comes to the latest Super Hero Action Movies or the Current Cartoon that they may not necessarily understand, I really don’t have a problem taking them nor letting them watch.
This may not be for everyone, but in our family we are good with it. I just always have to remember a week or so after the movie to keep reminding them it was pretend and that we don’t play with guns or any kind of weapons; that weapons can hurt people and we want to play and be nice to people.
My kids LOVED, did I say LOVED ‘The Avengers.’ I will admit I had a few minutes thinking hmmm… maybe this isn’t exactly for them. But they loved it. We talked all about it after and they reminded me of what may have been a little scary. Do I think it is for every young child? Probably not. The rating is PG-13 and there are reasons for those ratings, but every family is different and every family needs to know what is best for their kids.
Iron Man 3 hits the theaters this May 2013. Will I take my kids to see it? I think we will have to sit down at home and watch the first one and then perhaps the second one. I will carefully see how they react, and we will talk about each film. Then and only then can I determine if they’re really ready to sit through another. The world of make-believe and Super Heros is fascinating. If they can get lost and enjoy and understand that it’s fantasy without it affecting their sleep, I am all for it!
