Not Clueless: Alicia Silverstone Defends Pre-Chewing Her Baby's Food

By Joanna Mazewski |

Alicia Silverstone

According to Alicia Silverstone, all she was doing was introducing our culture a method of natural baby feeding that has been going on for thousands of years by pre-chewing her son’s food in her mouth. She wasn’t trying to gross us out. Nope, not at all.

The celebrity mom is hitting back at her critics who called her pre-chewing baby food method “gross” by adding that her unorthodox method of feeding her 10-month-old is even “cute” and “adorable.”

She says in an interview:

“It’s just a thing that has been going on for thousands of years and I didn’t think I was inventing anything but in our culture…,” she said. ”Every time my husband goes to the YMCA some guy comes over and says, ‘That’s how we do it in the south!’ Between him getting those great comments and me knowing in my gut it’s natural and lovely, I really wasn’t trying to tell anybody what to do.”

Tell us, would you try pre-chewing your child’s food in your mouth before feeding it to him? Have you ever done it before?

According to research chewing baby’s food has great benefits for their immune system (from mother’s saliva). Understandably, it seems “weird” because it’s not our culture’s norm but it is practiced regularly in other countries. I think we tend to judge what we don’t understand. I am choosing to stay open minded to this when my three month old baby grows and is ready for solid food.

It does not make any sense why you would chew the food for a child with TEETH!!!! Besides it;’s only hygienic if she flosses and brushes her teeth and uses a mouth wash!!! –before she does this! LMAO

I thought this was sooo gross when I first read about it (like 2 weeks ago). And then today I was eating an ice cream sandwich while holding my 14 month old on my hip. And she wanted a bite. And I didn’t have ANOTHER hand to break it off and pop it in her mouth. Soooo… yeah, I bit off a little chunk and let her take it from my mouth with her mouth. I still think it’s kind of gross and wouldn’t do it if I had access to a high chair or some other way to feed her, but I can’t say it wasn’t effective, ha ha.
