Now, This is NEWS: Newsies Gets 8 Tony Nominations!

By Sunny Chanel |

When I first heard that Disney would be turning the notorious bomb but beloved 1992 musical Newsies into a musical. I snickered. Really, I did. I guess that’s why I’m not in the business of Broadway. The stage production of Newsies hasn’t just been packing them in, but on Tuesday morning it was announced that the song and dance show about a group of scrappy newsboys had earned a stunning eight Tony nominations.  And some biggies at that…

They were honored with nominations for Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical (by Harvey Fierstein), Best Original Score (music by the one and only Alan Menken), Jeremy Jordan got a nod for Best Performance of an Actor in a Musical, Best Director, Best Choreography, Best Orchestrations, and Best Scenic Design. In an interview with Steve Fickinger – the VP of Creative Development and Licensing for the show  – he believed from the start that the show was going to do well saying, “I think that this is going to be a terrific experience for everyone who comes to see it.” He added,  “I do believe in heart, I do believe in humor, I do believe in emotion, and I think Newsies has all those things, so I think it’s gonna be terrific.”

And it looks like he isn’t the only one who thinks it’s terrific!
