Real Housewives of New York: The Alex-Simon-Ramona Connundrum

real housewives alex

As I get ready to hunker down for the Real Housewives of New York reunion show, I can’t help but get nostalgic for that first season of RHONY. Remember when Jill Zarin was sane? Remember when the loons were Alex McCord and Simon van Kempen, and Ramona Singer was the airhead? It’s like a bizarro flipside to the way RHONY looks today. Real Housewives‘  Alex and Simon, and Ramona, too, have managed to largely float above the fray. How’d that happen?

I’m mostly thinking about the early episodes of Alex and Simon with their kids. The kids were wild, their parents had no control, and it seemed the tykes would never get into school. We were all asking, who would want to take on trying to educate these kids? Plus, there was Alex and Simon’s weird shopping-together compulsion. And the fact that they couldn’t be apart for a single second. Plus, remember their social climbing obsession, and Alex’s glee at appearing in the society pages?

We all laughed when we heard they were putting out a parenting book, but then we changed our minds. This dynamic housewife-and-husband duo has come out the victors. They have a solid relationship (hello, Countess LuAnn’s divorce!) between two people who, it turns out can be apart (she went to St. John solo) and are romantic while not cloying. What happened? I’d love to hear what you think. Was it just bad editing the first season? Or maybe it was particularly good editing this season. Or maybe people can change. As it stands, I’m now firmly on team Alex & Simon.

As for Ramona, she’s turned into a force to be reckoned with. Like Alex, she’s parent with a strong marriage and has proven, with her vow renewal, that she knows how to show her love, has raised a seemingly great kid, and is a true equal to her husband. That’s not the woman I remember from season one, when she came off as a ditz. She’s turned out to be whip-smart, and I can’t wait to see more of her.

My opinions may change after tonight’s fracas. It’s happened before, right? For now, however, I’m loving these three.
