Remembering Tom Cavanagh: Dad Speaks Out On His Son's Mental IllnessToniFitz76
Sad news out of Rhode Island this morning: Tom Cavanagh, a former NHL prospect who turned pro at age 18, has died. (Note: This is not the same Tom Cavanagh who starred in the cult show “Ed;” he’s still very much alive.) Cavanagh was found in his car at a local shopping mall. Tom Cavanagh’s dad paid tribute to his son’s greatest achievement off the rink.
“Our son, Tom, was a young man who bravely fought the demons of mental illness for many years. This private struggle far surpassed his public athletic accomplishments,” Joseph Cavanagh said in a statement. He thanked the community for their support of his family in this difficult time.
Tom Cavanagh was an all-state hockey player in high school and went to Harvard to play. He graduated in 2005 and joined the American Hockey League, later rising to play for the San Jose Sharks. Our thoughts are with his family in this difficult time.
