Ricky Gervais has created a flurry of controversy because of his biting humor at the Golden Globe Awards Sunday night. But Ricky Gervais doesn’t care that Hollywood is upset with him.
Hollywood Foreign Press Association President Philip Berk told The Hollywood Reporter that Ricky’s jabs “crossed the line” but then the official word on Gervais was softened later in the day. E! reports that later in the day, that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association was singing a different tune. According E! News, the HFPA made the following statement:
“We loved the show,” the organization said in a statement to E! News. “It was a lot of fun and obviously has a lot of people talking. When you hire a comedian like Ricky Gervais, one expects in your face, sometimes outrageous material. Certainly, in this case, he pushed the envelope and occasionally went too far. The HFPA would never condone some of his personal remarks. Overall, however, the show was among the best we’ve ever had and we were pleased.”
What did other people think of Ricky Gervais as host?
Robert Downey Jr. called him “mean spirited” and according to the Hollywood Reporter, LA Times’ Mary McNamara was fuming. The Los Angeles Times critic said, Ricky Gervais was just too nasty…The opposite of dull and deferential is not snotty and abusive.”
Interviews with Ricky Gervais indicate that the funny man just doesn’t care if he hurt the feelings of some Hollywood stars. When asked if he had fun hosting the 2011 Golden Globe Awards, Gervais told the press,”Oh absolutely. For three hours every year, Hollywood is scared to death of me. It’s great.”
