Veteran ESPN annoucer Ron Franklin has been sidelined following some inappropriate behavior during Saturday’s Fiesta Bowl broadcast. Franklin made some rather crude comments to sideline reporter Jeanine Edwards during a production meeting before the start of the game.
Edwards and Franklin were both part of the ESPN team that were to participate in the Fiesta Bowl broadcast. The incident in question started out mildly when Edwards attempted to participate in a covervsation between Franklin and fellow broadcasters Ed Cunningham and Rod Gilmore about Gilmore’s wife recently being elected the mayor of Alameda, California. Franklin shunned her by reportedly saying, “Why don’t you leave this to the boys, sweetcakes.”
Edwards has long been a woman in a world of men’s dominated sports replied, “Don’t call me sweetcakes, I don’t like being talked to like that.” Franklin then allegedly sunk to a whole new low saying, “Okay then, asshole.” Edwards reported the incident to ESPN management who suspended Franklin from the air indefinitely earlier today.
The really terrible part of the story is that this is not the first time that Ron Franklin has treated female sports reporters with such venom and disregard! In 2005, Franklin had a similar incident when he called sideline reporter Holly Rowe sweetheart on air during a football game between Nortre Dame and Purdue. Ron Franklin received a warning from ESPN management for that incident and apologized to Holly Rowe. Unfortunately he has apparently not learned his lesson and will have to take a very public time-out!
