Salma Hayek: I Almost Quit Work for My Child

Salma Hayek: Busy and loving it

She’s no mere pretty face!

In addition to being a gifted actress and a loving mom to her daughter, Salma Hayek is also a savvy businesswoman. Her beauty product line, Nuance Salma Hayek, contains 100 products which she personally helped develop (she’s the granddaughter of a professional cosmetologist). Her Cooler Cleanse company sells detox products she formulated. And let’s not forget that she’s a producer with such credits to her name as Ugly Betty and Frida.

But, she says, there was a time in her life when she nearly chose a different path.

In the new issue of Marie Claire @Work, Hayek says that having Valentina in her early 40s made her reevaluate her priorities. “I think if you are young and you have children, you still have so much to prove. When you have children later in life, you lose a bit of that urge for working,” she explains. “At the time I was thinking, I can do another movie that may or may not work, or I can be with my child, nourish her and not miss a moment of this precious time.”

But it was her husband, Francois-Henri Pinault, who encouraged her to maintain her career – which is meaningful when you consider that he’s from the billionaire family that owns Gucci and Yves Saint Laurent.

“He told me, ‘You feel like this right now, but when Valentina grows a little older, you are going to want to go back and it might be too late,’ ” she says. ” ‘You are so smart, so talented. You have so much more potential. Don’t you want to see where it takes you?’ ”

Four years later, Hayek doesn’t regret her decision to continue working. But having her family and her businesses has made her see her acting in a new light. “[N]ow I don’t depend on it so much for my happiness and my identity,” she explains. “And since it’s not my priority, I am doing the best work I’ve ever done.”

Smart woman. In so many ways.
