People may get a kick out of mocking Alana “Honey Boo Boo” Thompson and her unabashedly redneck family, but this is no laughing matter.
Alana’s dad, Mike “Sugar Bear” Thompson, has been seen on crutches lately following a four-wheeler accident, and now it seems that his condition has taken a turn for the worse.
Mom June Shannon took to Facebook yesterday to update her fans on her partner’s condition. “as alot of u know sugar bear has had a 4 wheeler wreck while we was out mud bogging today it was his leg it was just badly bruised and then for the last wk it git infected…” she wrote.
Daily trips to the doctor and a round of antibiotics didn’t clear up the problem, so Sugar Bear was admitted to the hospital for evaluation and IV medication.
Today, June says, “we will have an mri and a small surgery maybe.” She calls it “nothing major,” but since Mike is diabetic, this is nothing to take lightly. Diabetics are especially prone to infections in the lower legs and feet, and if the infection can’t be controlled, amputation may be necessary.
The whole family came to see Mike yesterday, including Alana, who wore silver high heels for the occasion. Stepsisters Anna (“Chickadee“), Jessica (“Chubbs“) and Lauryn (“Pumpkin“) were at her side.
Say what you will about Honey Boo Boo, her sassy sayings and her Go-Go Juice, but let’s not forget that she’s a 7-year-old child who loves and relies on her parents. It’s a scary thing for a little girl to see her dad hurt one day and undergoing surgery the next. That swaggering side she shows to the cameras is as much of an act as the wiglets and frilly dresses she wears in kiddie beauty pageants.
The best thing June can do right now is love and comfort her youngest daughter, assuring her that her daddy is getting the best care and that someone will always be there to take care of her. And with luck, the treatment will do the job and Mike will be back to mud bogging before long.
Get well soon, Sugar Bear. Your little Honey Boo Boo needs you.
