Sean, an unarmed black man, was shot and killed by police officers in 2006 in New York City on the day of his wedding. The two friends receiving compensation were also in the vehicle when police began taking fire. They were shot several times but survived.
Each of Sean’s children, whom he had with his fiancée, Nicole Paultre Bell, will receive $3.25 million.
“I believe it’s fair,” Nicole mother, Laura Paultre, told the Daily News. “The children will be okay, and that’s the main thing.”
But is that enough? What is the cost of growing up without a father?
The Rev. Al Sharpton has weighed in saying: “They must all provide for their families, but this in no way mitigates or repairs the permanent damage done to them and the pain it has caused them forever. Nor does it diminish the outrage in the community.”
