Can owning a pet predict how well you’ll adjust to parenthood?
Shannen Doherty thinks so – and judging by her experiences with her new puppy Bowie, she’s wondering whether she and husband Kurt Iswarienko are ready to bring a baby into the mix.
“We go back and forth all the time about it,” she told People at a birthday party for Jennie Garth on Thursday. “It’s like one minute we’re like, ‘Oh my God, let’s have a baby!’ and the next minute our puppy does something crazy.”
The couple now has three dogs, all large breeds with playful natures (puppy Bowie is as big as many full-grown dogs), and it sounds as though Shannen and Kurt have their hands full.
Still, they’re keeping their options open. The house they’re currently building is equipped with a nursery.
But if that room eventually gets turned into an office or guest room, that’s fine with the Shannen Says star as well.
She’s “taking the steps to be healthy and in the right place for a child, but if it happens, it happens,” she says, “and if it doesn’t, I think we’re completely okay.”
Shannen is wise to be cautious. Dogs are a big responsibility – but babies are an even bigger one. You can leave a dog home for an hour while you go shopping, and you don’t have to feed an animal six times a day. And most of the time, a trained dog will do what you tell it to do. Try doing that with a 3-year-old.
And then there’s the whole part-of-my-heart, center-of-my-universe, love-worry-protect-cherish-for-eternity deal that comes with motherhood. But we’re sure she knows that, too.
Whatever the future holds, hopefully it will hold only joy for Shannen and Kurt. (And baby or no, the future will still hold a lot of poop too.)
