Of the long list of celebrity splits this year, one of the most shocking was that of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver. After 25 years of marriage, the power couple announced their separation after the former Governator admitted to having an affair with their housekeeper that resulted in a child. Shriver filed for divorce in July.
Once the initial furor was over, they faded quickly into the background as other shocking gossip stories took their place – Kim and Kris! Demi and Ashton! J. Lo and Marc! If you’re like us, you assumed that Shriver and Schwarzenegger were quietly dealing with financial and custody matters (they have four children) before announcing their divorce was final.
Well, not so fast. A report from TMZ today says that Shriver may be on the verge of reconciling with her horndog husband.
Sources say Maria, a devout Catholic, may be reconsidering the breakup for religious reasons. If she and Arnold were to divorce, she would not be allowed to receive the sacrament of Communion. She would also be unable to remarry in the Church unless she got an annulment from her first marriage.
But she may also be open to rekindling the flame. It seems Schwarzenegger is determined to win his estranged wife’s love by being “extremely sweet” and offering her thoughtful gifts.
Staying friendly for the sake of the kids is one thing. Debra Messing and her husband are sharing quarters during their separation to make life easier for their 7-year-old son. But this situation is something else again.
Should religion be the only thing keeping a couple together? Is it more moral to stay in a loveless marriage torn by infidelity for the sake of the faith, or to part ways and continue to live a religious and charitable life?
And can a wife really forgive a husband who committed the ultimate betrayal? Is Arnold truly repentant – and if so, are a few pricey gifts enough to make up for his sins?
Sound off, Famecrawler Fans!
