Mom confession here: the other night, I had a special mom’s night out with a dear friend who I’ve known since my high school days, and along with a margarita, I had one cigarette. It was my first mom’s night out in maybe six months and my first cigarette in almost a decade. Yes, a decade.
Now, before we begin judging that one little cigarette (or me who puffed on it), let me say this as my disclaimer: I’m a mother who loves to stay healthy by eating right and exercising, but I do have my days when I’d rather eat a bag of peanut butter M&Ms or snuggle with my children in bed than go on another 6-mile long run. Kind of like Chandler Bing on Friends, I too have that “ahhhhhh” moment whenever I allow myself to do something I’m not allowed. Ahem.
I mean, just like you, your neighbors, your co-workers, and so on, I’m human. Before I had my children, I was never an addicted smoker per say, but I did have an occasional smoke during my college years for social purposes. I’d say it was about one cigarette per week, and oftentimes I also shared it with one my girlfriends. Of course, I was also a secret smoker who made sure that my parents would never find out, and I never did it in broad daylight either.
Now, was it wrong for me to be a social smoker back then or to have that one cigarette during my mom’s night out? Some might say yes, some might say no. I don’t plan on making a habit out of it, and just like with my parents, I would never have one in front of my children, because that would be setting a horrible example. We’ve all got our vices and our secrets, and just because we’re parents, it doesn’t mean we can’t make our occasional mistake that we choose to do once in awhile. Mine are, of course, peanut butter M&Ms and my one-per-decade cigarette.
Now, as far as the celebrity world goes, there are other celebrities who sneak in that occasional cigarette, too. As health-conscious as Gwyneth Paltrow is, she too has admitted to having one cigarette per week just to help her unwind and relax. Now, that doesn’t mean that every mother out there uses a cigarette stick to help her calm down after a busy day at work and at home, but we all have our methods of de-stressing, whatever they may be.
Check out our photo gallery below of celebrities who are also “secret” smokers, and let us know what you think. You’d be surprised to see who made the list! Also, would you judge another mother if you found out she was a smoker?
