Last night, I told you that Blake Griffin was rumored to be jumping over a car in the Slam Dunk Contest 2011. Did he do it?
Yes, he did. The 26th NBA dunk contest was won in iconic style all in front of his his hometown fans. While the Crenshaw Select Choir sang “I Believe I Can Fly”, Blake Griffin ran, jumped over a and then threw down a two-handed dunk.
But the car was not a Toyota, as previously rumored. Griffin easily cleared the hood of a 2011 Kia Optima, while catching a pass from teammate Baron Davis out of the sunroof!
Griffin grew up watching and studying every dunk contest on videotape with his brother in Oklahoma. He said the car dunk was his idea from the very start. He thought it would be a great way to show off true athleticism and some Hollywood flair.
“When they first came to me … they said there were no rules,” Griffin said. “I was like, ‘So I can jump over a car? Yeah? Oh, maybe I have to do it now.’ I figured I could probably clear it.
Now the question is, how’s he going to top this next year? Griffin admitted he didn’t know, but added:”I have to come up with something else. Maybe a boat next year.”
