A few months ago, I did something horrible. My teenage daughter defied me by sneaking out of the house when I’d told her not to go somewhere, so I screamed at her and tied her to her bed as punishment.
What’s more, I loved every minute of it.
Why? Because I was onstage in a local theater, getting laughs and applause for my portrayal of Prudy Pingleton, the twisted mother of the heroine’s best friend in the musical Hairspray.
Of course, I don’t behave like that in real life. My kids may think I’m a total meanie when I nag them to clean their rooms or cut off TV privileges for infractions like neglecting homework, but trust me, I’m nowhere near Prudy-level badness.
But when you’re a mother who acts – either as a hobby, as I do, or as a profession, like Angelina Jolie here – it’s just plain fun to step outside your good-mom zone and go a little wild as a villain.
Disney just announced a March 2014 release date for their new project, Maleficent, starring Jolie as the evil fairy who has it in for Sleeping Beauty. She recently said that she can’t wait to play the part.
“I hope in the end you see a woman who is capable of being many things,” she said, ” and just because she protects herself and is aggressive, it doesn’t mean she can’t have other [warmer] qualities.”
Angie and I aren’t the only mothers who enjoy being a little bad once in a while. Check out this lineup of ubertalented actress-moms who make evil look good!
