SO Sad! Danny DeVito and Rhea Perlman Separating

Rhea Perlman and Danny DeVito.

We’ve seen a lot of surprising and dismaying celebrity splits this year – Tom and Katie, Heidi and Seal, Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis, Amy Poehler and Will Arnett – but this one may hit hardest of all for fans.

Danny DeVito and Rhea Perlman have decided that their marriage isn’t so sunny after 30 years. DeVito’s rep confirmed to Us Weekly that the couple has separated.

For those who remember them from their days on Cheers and Taxi, it’s almost like seeing their own parents split. For those who know them from their countless other film and TV roles, it’s stunning to think that a couple married that long could decide that it’s just not working out. To top it off, they lived together for 11 years before they got married. Hardly a case of two impulsive kids rushing into a commitment.

And, well, they always seemed happy. But as we all know, there are often tears behind the smiles in the photos.

DeVito and Perlman have three children, all in their 20s: Lucy, Grace and Jacob. It must be almost as rough on them as it would be on smaller kids. They probably held up their parents’ marriage as an example of true love, maybe hoped for a 30-year stretch themselves.

No details yet about what caused the split. Hopefully it’s one of those cases of “just growing apart” and wanting a fresh start on their own.

Whatever happens, we wish them all the best. Hope they find the happiness that they weren’t able to sustain after so many years.
