Odd Fact of Life #3,498,122: If you’re carrying around a little too much extra weight, you’re supposed to stay away from stripes – especially horizontal ones. Adds pounds! Emphasizes a pudgy tummy! Bewaaaaaaare!
But when that tummy has an incubating baby behind it, that rule goes totally out the window. Maternity stores are filled with so many striped tops, sweaters and dresses that you’d think they were expecting a zebra convention.
To which I say, why not? Stripes can be very becoming when you’re becoming a mom. Strategically placed, they can even de-emphasize a growing bump.
And when you’re Alyson Hannigan, a long dress with wide stripes looks absolutely adorable.
Then again, a burlap sack would look absolutely adorable on her, because she’s Alyson freakin’ Hannigan. The woman has more sweetness and charm than a box of kids’ cereal.
And look! Daughter Satyana is sporting stripes, too!

Jessica Simpson
Jessica chose this maternity dress wisely. The chevron-style stripes create a slimming effect - not easy to do with her large weight gain.
In 2009, the former "Dharma and Greg" star was a hit in this red-and-black number. The off-center diagonal stripes and one-shouldered design de-emphasized her pregnancy.
In 2010, the supermodel made a wise choice with this stylish maternity sweater. The white collar and black cuffs set off the stripes nicely. However, the gold button accent is set in an awkward spot.
