When you give your child an unusual name, you have to accept that certain disadvantages come with the territory. Your child will go through life hearing her name mispronounced. She’ll have to correct misspellings on all her documents. She’ll repeat her name over the phone a thousand times: “That’s Calliope – C-A-L-L-I-O-P-E.” Remarks like: “Is that your real name?” and “I’ve never heard that one before!” will be tossed her way on a daily basis.
And when you’re a major celebrity, you face an additional problem: Everyone knows your child’s uncommon name. Just saying, “Come here, Zuma!” or “No, Pax, you can’t have Black Ops 2” is an invitation for the phone cams to start snapping and the autograph hounds to appear.
But Katie Holmes has come up with a solution. According to In Touch Weekly, she uses a pseudonym for Suri when they’re out in public.
A source explains to the magazine, “Everyone in the world knows Suri Cruise, so if Katie or a babysitter says ‘Suri,’ people immediately look to find her.”
So to avoid “privacy issues,” Katie calls her daughter “Sara” when they’re out of the shelter of their home.
The insider says that Katie uses “Sara” even when talking to her fellow cast members of Dead Accounts, her new Broadway show. A public code name, the source explains, is no different from celebs who use phony monikers when they check into hotels (Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are said to sign themselves as “Bryce and Jasmine Pilaf”).
How does Suri feel about all this? Well, in August, she was reportedly seen at the Build-a-Bear Workshop store making a new stuffed friend that she named Sara — without an “h,” so she and her bear would each have a four-letter name.
For now, she probably sees it as a game — and she’s probably glad of any opportunity not to be recognized. But it’s doubtful she’ll go through her entire school career leading a double life. Kids are proud of their identities, and there will come a day when Ms. Cruise will say to her mom, “Would you stop calling me that? My name is Suri.”
Or maybe just the opposite will happen: The World’s Most Famous Star Kid will decide that she likes the anonymity of her fake persona and ditch her exotic given name forever.
What do you think will happen?
