Surprise, Surprise: Eminem Is One Of The Entertainment Worlds Best Celebrity Parents

Screen Shot 2013-10-07 at 5.03.55 PMEminem might be one of the most controversial rappers of our generation, but there’s a different side to him that many people really don’t know about. Sure, he makes headlines about his lyrics and the reality star he’s offending in his latest radio hit, but there’s another side to Marshall Mathers that many people don’t really get to see because it’s one that he keeps well hidden from the spotlight: his life as a father.

Okay, so Eminem is known to have rapped about wanting to kill his baby mama (along with his battle with substance abuse and addiction) but almost a decade later, he appears to have changed his life around.

This might make you feel old, but his daughter Hailie, who we might remember as the cute blonde toddler who appeared by her father’s side during the height of his success in the early 2000s, is now gasp 17 years old. And what’s more, she is an honor student who was just crowned Homecoming Queen at her high school in Chippewa Valley, Michigan. Despite Eminem’s tumultuous and drama-ridden relationship with Hailie’s mother, Kim Scott, it looks like the teen is doing quite well for herself and has managed to stay out of the public spotlight despite her father’s fame. What’s more, Eminem did not participate in the Homecoming ceremony as he didn’t want to disrupt his daughter’s most important high school memory and instead watched his little girl out of public view and in one of the school’s classrooms.

From everything we’ve read and heard about Em, it’s quite surprising, isn’t it?

From what we know, Eminem’s love for his daughter is clearly visible in the numerous songs he’s written about her, including the aptly titled “Hailie’s Song,” where he sings:

‘But when I see my baby, suddenly I’m not crazy, it all makes sense when I look into her eyes. Hailie, remember when I said, “If you ever need anything, daddy will be right there?” Well guess what? Daddy’s here. And I ain’t goin’ nowhere baby. I love you.’

That kind of daddy to daughter adoration sure makes your heart melt, doesn’t it? And if that weren’t enough, Eminem clearly loves being a big-hearted sappy daddy as he’s also a father to two more children: Whitney, Kim’s child from a previous relationship, and Alaina, Kim’s sister’s child, both of whom he legally adopted. Who knew this tough-talking, former Detroit street kid would become an admirable family man who manages to successfully keep his daughters out of the limelight while raising them respectfully? Despite his image and personal problems from the past, he was caring enough to step in and take care of his ex-wife’s other children when he had no obligation to do so. He has also helped family and friends when in difficulty, which only demonstrates that someone can be a decent human being no matter what his public persona might be.

Really, all I can say is kudos to Eminem for being one of the best dads in the business. He definitely deserves respect for not only being a talented and intelligent lyricist, but for being a grounded, down-to-earth father who loves and protects his children as well. He never used his fame or success to thrust his family into the spotlight with a cable-network reality show or allowed them to believe that they have some discernible talent attached to their last name. Heck, he has even managed to stay away from gossip fodder for almost a decade, too. Instead, he and Kim managed to put their drama to the side to raise what we see to be one very beautiful, college-bound daughter who is headed in the right direction in her life.

Simply put, Eminem is one of the best fathers in the entertainment business. Now, if only other parents in the celebrity world would take note, too.
