For better or worse, like it or not, when you’re a mother, you have to keep your children in mind every minute of the day. Every decision you make – big or small – can affect them.
When you’re also a single mom, those decisions matter even more – especially when those choices involve bringing a new man into your children’s life.
If you’ve been following today’s Twitter messages from Teen Mom 2 star Jenelle Evans, you know that she and her boyfriend Gary Head are on the outs yet again. You’ll recall that they split last week after a terrible argument, then got back together shortly after.
The details are still a little fuzzy, but it seems that the fight had to do with Gary texting an ex of his, for which Jenelle retaliated by texting her ex Kieffer Delp.
They argued, made up briefly – long enough for them to go to lunch at Olive Garden – then an hour or two later, called it quits for good. Apparently Jenelle got the police involved as well, for reasons yet unknown.
Now, I love a happy romantic ending as much as anyone, but in this case, I’m hoping these two really are done. Why?
Because there’s a little guy named Jace in the picture.
He may be only 2, but he’s old enough to be affected by having a new father figure brought into his life out of nowhere, then taken away again just as quickly. Children need stability and trust, not the uncertainty of wondering whether Mom’s new guy is going to be there on the next visitation weekend.
Jace also deserves better than to have a potential stepdad who thinks nothing of arguing loudly with his mom right in front of him. “I told him to stop and he said he didn’t care,” Jenelle tweeted. Or who soothes his broken heart by tweeting messages about finding a better woman and posting pictures of himself with lady friends. All props to this Marine for serving our country, but his conduct out of uniform isn’t always becoming.
Oh, and let’s not forget that during their last fight, Gary threatened to bar Jenelle from regaining custody of Jace.
Finally, Jace deserves to have a mother who can devote herself to getting her life straightened out, staying clean and in therapy, starting a non-TV career and doing what’s right for her son. That will be easier to do without the drama of being in an on-again-off-again relationship.
So, Jenelle, here’s wishing you healing, serenity…and the courage to realize that this breakup has to be permanent, for Jace’s sake. Just because you two have matching tattoos doesn’t make you a perfect match.
