How fast kids grow! One minute they’re crawling in their playpens, and the next minute they’re ready for their first bike.
For many children, a trike or small training-wheel bike is their introduction to life on wheels. But young Bentley, son of Teen Mom star Maci Bookout, likes his ride a little more thrilling.
Maci, a devoted dirt-bike fan, bought her three-year-old a dirt bike not long ago. Yesterday, Bentley tested his skills for the first time on a track.
His mom was proud but nervous as she tweeted, “watchin benny ride his first time on the track! #motomom #heartattacks.”
The sport seems to suit Bentley just fine – in this pic, he zipped down the track like a pro.
But the question lots of moms are probably asking now is: Is it safe for such a young child to ride a dirt bike?According to the American Motorcycle Association, it’s fine for children as young as three or four to try their hand at dirt-bike riding, as long as they show signs of readiness. One expert says that children should be coordinated enough to balance, steer around obstacles and have the hand strength to apply the throttle and brake properly. Kids’ classes are available to teach children how to ride safely.
So while not everyone would agree about the wisdom of letting a preschooler behind the controls of a heavy motorized vehicle (myself included), plenty of parents are happy to give their children a taste of the open road at an early age – especially ones like Maci, who love biking themselves. (YouTube is full of home footage of kids taking to the track.)
And one has to admit that Bentley looks like a natural.
What do you think? Is Bentley a future BMX champ? Or should he put his hobby on hold till he’s a little bigger?
