Tribeca film festival is a place for movies, movie makers and movie lovers and on Saturday night it was also the place for heroes and lots of them.
On the closing night of the Tribeca Flim Festival, a little movie called The Avengers took the screen. Okay, i lied. There is nothing little about The Avengers. It has big action, a multi-faceted script, a huge heart and the Hulk. Seriously, it’s big. And it’s already bringing in bucko bucks and breaking records even before it opens in the states to the tune of $178.4 million dollars. It is so big that it was the was the largest opening weekend in 12 different regions. And me, I got to see it before its May 4th opening, but not in Mexico, New Zealand or Hong Kong. I was lucky enough to see it at Tribeca with the stars of the film, a group of us “mommy bloggers,” an uber svelte Miss Universe, Michael J. Fox and the real heroes – 200 or so- of New York City’s finest including police officers, firefighters and 911 first responders.
The cast (including Robert Downey Jr., Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, and Cobie Smulders) took to the stage and an always energetic Downey Jr. paid homage – with a cheering and clapping standing ovation – to these very human, very courageous and very real heroes. Not the stuff of comic books or big budget movies but those who on a daily basis fight the bad guys and keep us safe and secure. These men and women may not have powers like Iron Man, or a cape like Thor or the ability to get all mad, giant and green, but they are our real super heroes. It was a fitting and fantastic way to pay tribute.
The Tribeca screening – held at the Borough of Manhattan Community College – there may not have been all the gltiz and glamor of a Hollywood premiere but the energy of the event – from the firemen in their dress uniforms to the fans lining up on the sides dressed like Loki – shined just as bright if not brigther.
