"The Craigslist Killer" Lifetime Movie: How Much Was Based On a True Story?

Did you watch the Lifetime movie “The Craigslist Killer?” If you missed it, we’ll tell you when you can catch it again.

The movie was based off of the story of Phillip Markoff, the alleged killer who killed himself in jail before he went to trial. When we see “based on a true story,” we always wonder exactly how much really happened the way the movie shows and how much is just for the sake of the movie.

Some of the facts were definitely skewed for the movie. Phillip Markoff and his fiancee did not meet while volunteering at Boston Medical Center, but rather while they were students in Albany, NY. In the movie, UCLA stands in for Boston University and the apartment where the couple lived was more secluded than what was shown in the movie.

In general, though, the story is a recounting of the events as they happened. Though the three attacks that are depicted are only what markoff was accused of, since we can’t know for sure what happened and he died before his trial.

Overall, it was a spooky reminder that we can’t really know someone.

If you missed the movie and want to check it out, Lifetime is showing “The Craigslist Killer” Saturday night at 9pm and again on Sunday night at 7pm and 11pm.
