In the Duggar home, the motto is “There’s always room for one more.” Parents Michelle and Jim Bob already have 19 children and live by the belief that only God can determine the final size of a family.
In this week’s edition of her blog for TLC, Michelle reveals that their household just got a little bigger with three little new additions…
…kittens, that is!
A couple of months ago, the older Duggar boys were working on a construction site when they discovered the animals – only a week old – nestled in the insulation of a wall.
“The building was going to be secured before we left, so we knew that the mother cat wasn’t going to be able to get back in,” explains Michelle, “and we didn’t want to leave the kittens out in the open because there are wild animals near the woods that might’ve eaten them.” So the boys got the little ones out of the wall and brought them home.
But taking care of newborn animals is just as time-consuming as caring for a human baby, and Michelle soon found herself growing bleary-eyed feeding three hungry fuzzballs late at night, plus attending to her busy family during the day. After all, she still has four young ones – Johannah, Jennifer, Jordyn-Grace and Josie are 6, 5, 3 and 2.
That’s when she called on her group of middle children to start learning a new responsibility.
Michelle enlisted Joy-Anna, Jeremiah, Jedidiah, Jason, James and Justin, who range in age from 14 to 9, to give their new furry family members their bottles during the day. Nineteen-year-old older sister Jessa, who did her share of animal care at their age, watched them to make sure the milk didn’t go up the kittens’ noses. Michelle praises her daughter for helping teach her siblings without intervening too much.
“It’s just really great when you see your older children encouraging their brothers and sisters in life, helping them understand what it is to be responsible and caring,” Michelle says.
The new additions bring the Duggar cat count to five – and the activity level to about three times that! (Wonder who’s in charge of the litter boxes?)
