The Duggars Support Todd Akin: Politics Is a Family Affair

19 Kids and Counting Duggars First Grandson specil

The Duggars and their 19 kids are counting...on your votes.

As the campaign race sprints toward its conclusion, millions of voters are making their final decisions. Many of them are parents, and many of those parents will be discussing the elections with their children. They may even take their kids to their polling place to watch democracy in action.

Michelle and Jim Bob Duggar are very politically active, and they hope to pass on that quality to their 19 children. Earlier this year, they threw their support behind Rick Santorum in his bid for the Republican nomination; now, they’re publicly stumping for a candidate in a major senatorial race who’s trying to unseat his incumbent.

Today and tomorrow, the family will be appearing in various locations around Missouri to rally for Todd Akin, the Republican candidate going up against incumbent Claire McCaskill.

And when we say “the family,” we mean almost everyone right down to toddlers Jordyn-Grace and Josie. Only John and Jill, two of the older Duggars, will be absent. Oldest son Josh, his wife and two young children will also attend.

Why is the Arkansas clan so committed to a candidate not from their state? As conservative Christians, they side with Akin’s sharply right-wing platform, which includes fixing the tax code, upholding the Second Amendment, repealing Obamacare and banning abortion. (No word on whether Michelle Duggar agrees with Akin’s controversial statement about women being physically incapable of becoming pregnant after a rape.)

It’s important for children to understand and care about the voting process and the issues that their country faces. So kudos to the Duggars for helping get their family off to a good start. One of the greatest goals we can achieve as parents is to raise responsible, informed and involved citizens.

But it’s also important for children to learn that there are two sides to every story. Here’s hoping Michelle and Jim Bob encourage their sons and daughters – both big and little – to research the issues and the candidates when it comes time for them to vote, and to keep an open mind.

It’ll be interesting to see what happens as the young Duggars grow up.
