Since the day that Madonna’s adoption of Mercy James was denied, “Mercy” – who’s real name is Chifundo Moyo – has been living with Madonna’s friend Lois Silo and getting an education in western culture and the English language. So, was there ever really any doubt that Madonna wouldn’t eventually win the adoption appeal?
When you’re a international superstar, you expect to get your way most of the time. Maybe that explains why Madge went to great lengths to get Mercy out of the orphanage, and into the home of Silo, who also happens to head up Madonna’s charity organization Raising Malawi.
From one perspective, the two month appeals process has served as a great transition time in which Chifundo could get a little prep course on Western manners. From the Daily Mail:
“During the long wait for the court’s decision it appears Madonna left nothing to chance.
Mercy has been hidden away, ready to pack instantly if the adoption went Madonna’s way. The girl, who used to live in an orphanage, was taken to a luxury bungalow on the day in April when Madonna left the country in tears after her first attempt at adoption failed…
According to local sources, Mrs Silo and her husband have been caring for Mercy, helping her to speak English and teaching her Western manners. Each morning she has been driven to the nearby Cherub nursery, a privately run fee-paying school. There she plays with other Malawian children who knew nothing of her special status until they heard on Friday that she was leaving the country.”
Sounds like, even if Madonna’s money and star power didn’t influence the outcome, it definitely helped make things run smoothly while the court made its decision.
