The Good (Baby) Book! Which Celebs Gave Their Children Biblical Names?

Shakira will give her baby son a biblical name.

Fans were psyched to hear that Shakira is expecting a baby boy sometime next year. And fans of the Bible were probably just as psyched to hear the name she and boyfriend Gerard Pique have chosen. A newspaper announced the other day that their son will be named Biel – in the Spanish Catalan dialect, that’s a nickname for Gabriel. A guy could do worse than to be named for a horn-blowing messenger of the Almighty.

While certain celebrities have made headlines and raised eyebrows for giving their children offbeat monikers (Blue Ivy, Tennessee, Pilot Inspektor and Moon Unit, just to name a few), many more quietly turn to the Good Book for inspiration.

And why not? These names have stood the test of time; if they were good enough nearly 6,000 years ago, they should be good enough for 21st-century kids. They’re dignified without being weird (although you don’t see many Methusalehs or Hepzibahs these days). And they grow as the child does: a baby Benny or Becky easily becomes a Benjamin or Rebecca later.

Here are some other famous parents who chose names from the Testaments, both Old and New:

  • Moses 1 of 15
Gwyneth Paltrow named her son after the hero of Exodus who freed the Israelites from Egypt and received the Ten Commandments.
  • Isaiah 2 of 15
The View co-host Elisabeth Hasselbeck chose the name of an important Old Testament prophet for her son, although she joked that "He'll never be able to spell his own name."
  • John 3 of 15
It's the name of one of Jesus's apostles -- and the middle name of Nick and Vanessa Lachey's new baby boy.
  • Noah 4 of 15
Perhaps Megan Fox and husband Brian Austin Green hope their new son will be an animal lover. Alessandra Ambrosio also named her son after the famous biblical ark-builder.
  • Hannah, Leah and Joel 5 of 15

Three of Kate Gosselin's sextuplets are named for biblical figures. Hannah was the mother of Samuel, Leah was the first of Jacob's wives and Joel was one of the twelve minor prophets.
  • Levi 6 of 15
Levi was a son of Jacob and one of the leaders of the Twelve Tribes of Israel. He's also the son of Matthew McConaughey and Camila Alves. Wonder what they'll name their baby on the way?
  • Samuel 7 of 15
Although Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner didn't delve into the Bible when they chose their daughters' names, they opted to name their son after a major Hebrew prophet.
  • David 8 of 15
Jennifer Hudson's little boy is named after his dad -- and after an important king of Israel.
  • Luke 9 of 15
Kirk Cameron and Chelsea Noble have six children, one of whom is named for an author of one of the Gospels. Son James Thomas's names are also New Testament-derived.
  • Eve 10 of 15
This "tempting" name is not only the first woman in the Bible, it's also the name of one of Jessica Capshaw's children.
  • Isaac 11 of 15
Since Joel McHale's name is also biblical, it's not surprising he gave his son the name of one of the Hebrew patriarchs.
  • Levi 12 of 15
Like Matthew McConaughey, Sheryl Crow chose the trendy name for one of her sons (her other son is Wyatt). The boys' middle names also figure prominently in the New Testament: James and Steven.
  • Benjamin 13 of 15
Gisele Bundchen and Tom Brady gave their son the name of another leader of the Twelve Tribes. Will their next baby be Asher or Issachar?
  • Mary 14 of 15
James Marsden's daughter's name isn't one of the trendiest right now, but being named for the mother of Jesus is no small matter.
  • Sam, John, Daniel and Joseph 15 of 15
    Sam, John, Daniel and Joseph
Patricia Heaton turned to the Good Book for all four of her sons' names!
